If only face painters were magicians! We get asked all the time to paint some pretty interesting things! A lot of researching, trialling and inventing goes with professional face painting. Painters work hard behind the scenes to keep up to date with trends, diversity and the ever-changing industry.
Face painters have access to a wide range of learning materials to build their skills. Social platforms, face painting schools, workshops and other intellectual material is readily available. Researching all the places you can find information is vital for face painters.
Face painters not only paint on the job, but they also practice at home, working hard behind the scenes to maintain and upskill. Not just anyone can be a face painter. It is a niche. It’s unlike any other painting medium. Trialling designs often happen on the job. It’s hard to perfect a design from a 2D concept on paper, to an application on a face and then many other faces. Often, designs need to be tweaked and tweaked until they are universal. Take the very popular butterfly, one of the hardest designs to do (professionally.) A butterfly consists of wing elements. These elements need to have symmetry and come to focal points on a face. They also need to follow the natural shape of a butterfly. Combining focal points and contours with butterfly anatomy, can be very challenging, but when you find a design that works for you, you can create something magical.
.Once a face painter has found support within the industry, through joining groups, classes or having jam sessions, they find their confidence to start inventing their own designs. It’s important to pay it forward. Painters use others artwork as inspiration all the time. Inventing your own designs usually comes from inspirations like, clipart. There’s no need to re-invent the wheel. Find artwork around you or use nature or still-life to come up with a concept. Trial it many ways. The most important thing is that it’s relatable. Face painting is an artwork that is modelled and advertised by the person wearing it – a bit like fashion clothing! Even though your face paint is temporary, the feelings that go with it are real.
