Our Frequently Asked Questions

Contact us anytime to ask questions about face painting!

Yes. Professional face and body painters use cosmetic grade body paint with base ingredients including, water, glycerine and/or paraffin (wax) that is made by reputable brands and approved by Standards Australia (Cosmetic Standard) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration-cosmetic-products/makeup).

Ask! You can ask where they buy their paints from, or ask to see the label? Reputable brands are usually bought online from large manufacturers, such as Mehron Paradise, TAG, and FPA (Face Paints Australia.) Only professional paints will give you a bright, vibrant colour that won’t crack, peel or drip. They should be applied creamy and dry like a powder.

Conditionally. Some companies produce cream and liquid face paint for retailing at craft stores. Although these paints are conditionally safe for skin, they are cheaper brands, which means they have more additives that can cause unpredictable reactions on skin. Craft store face paint is usually low quality and difficult to use effectively. It can be translucent, thin and dull when applied to the skin.

Easily. Most people will just wash it off in the shower or bath. However, if you want to make sure there is minimal residue or staining, the best way to remove it is:

1. Don’t start by using water alone. The water will only wash off the top layers of the paint but won’t break up the pigment and may punch the pores of the skin with more paint.

2. Start by using a facewash or makeup remover with a few drops of water. Massage painted area with fingertips until a muddy consistency is formed.

3. Use a wet wipe or moistened flannel to wipe away the paint. Rinse with warm water. Repeat if necessary. For tough areas, use a gentle oil, like coconut or olive oil.

There are two check points to investigate if a reaction appears to have occurred. Firstly, the reason can be the paint itself, or any other product that was used on the skin recently. Secondly, it may be a result of incorrectly removing the paint. Do the following if you think your child has had a reaction. 1. Do not rub the area, gently remove the face paint as per instructions “How do you remove face paint.” Leave the skin clean and without anything applied topically and seek professional advice if necessary. Contact Shelle’s Fancy Face Painting and advise of the reaction. The incident will be reported to the manufacturer and followed up within a few days.

Face paint with a strong pigment can stain. Some brands have produced face paint that is less likely to stain, like Mehron and Superstar. We buy high pigment face paint from these brands. If you experience staining, do not rub the area, gently remove the face paint as per instructions “How do you remove face paint?

No face paint is not waterproof, although there are some brands that have produced water resistant face paint that is activated with a mixing fluid. It is not recommended to go out in the rain or sweat when you have face paint applied to your skin.

As long as you like! However, if you think your skin might be sensitive, remove as soon as you can. Professional face paint is a makeup product and just like makeup, it is usually safe to wear all day.
